Finding Clarity: Exploring The Three Ordinary Voices of God

Thank you for joining me on today’s episode of A Little More Inspired! In this episode, we’re diving deep into the first chapter of The Three Ordinary Voices of God by Matthew Kelly.

When my sister handed me a small book she’d picked up from the free books basket at her church, I thought, “This should be a quick read—let me just read it.” What I didn’t expect was to discover a hidden gem packed with profound insights. It was clear this little book was the perfect first topic for my blog and podcast. The book, The Three Ordinary Voices of God by Matthew Kelly, is written from the perspective of his Catholic faith. As I’ve mentioned before, I believe there’s something to learn from everyone, regardless of their spiritual background. At the heart of every spiritual book I’ve read lies universal truths and profound knowledge.

In this episode, we explore the first chapter of The Three Ordinary Voices of God. Each chapter offers so much insight that I didn’t want to rush through it. So, I decided to turn this into a mini-series, where we can unpack the spiritual wisdom chapter by chapter. In the first chapter, Matthew Kelly introduces the idea of a “misspent life.” At first glance, many of us might think, “That’s not me. I haven’t lived a bad life—I’m not a criminal or out doing things I shouldn’t be doing.” But Kelly’s concept goes deeper than that. A misspent life is the realization that we might not be where we hoped we’d be. Perhaps there’s a low level of dissatisfaction we can’t quite explain, or dreams and desires we never pursued because we followed the path of what we thought we should do. Kelly challenges us to ask, What if we could turn things around? Is it too late, or are we stuck in the mundane rhythm of life?

This chapter explores the hope that even if we feel we’ve strayed from the life we envisioned, it’s never too late to change direction—one small decision at a time. But what if we don’t know our purpose? What if we’ve never taken the time to ask ourselves what truly matters to us? Kelly introduces a beautiful concept: God has been speaking to us our entire lives through three ordinary voices—our needs, talents, and desires. By intentionally reflecting on these areas, we can uncover clarity, purpose, and wisdom. When we make decisions from a place of consciousness and seek the guidance hidden in our inner spiritual world, we can begin to unlock the engagement and direction we’ve been searching for.

In this episode, I reflect on the hope and encouragement Kelly offers in the first chapter. No matter where we are in life, there’s always an opportunity to realign with our purpose. I hope you’ll listen to the full episode and leave feeling A Little More Inspired.
