Discovering the Spiritual Teachings of St. Teresa of Avila: Her Life and The Interior Castle

I’m thrilled to share that I’m working on a series dedicated to the spiritual teachings of St. Teresa of Avila. Together, we’ll explore her life and delve into one of her most profound works—The Interior Castle.

Scroll to the bottom of this post to watch the first installment of this series, where I begin uncovering her wisdom. But first, I invite you to enjoy my collection of thoughts on why I find St. Teresa so deeply inspiring.

Over the last couple of weeks and months, I have been learning and falling in love with the teachings of St. Teresa of Avila. A Spanish Carmelite nun, mystic, writer, and poet, her work feels as relevant today as ever, transforming me with her words and insights. St. Teresa of Avila has a profound way of writing about the spiritual journey, what an individual can expect to experience when truly dedicating themselves to their interior life. She has given me clarity on the inner turmoil I have felt for years, especially after my initial spiritual awakening. She guides you through the process of staying focused on uniting your soul with divine consciousness while exposing the obstacles you will face as the ego fights to remain in its comfort of ignorance.

I have read many spiritual/self-help books over the last seven years, if you can think of it, I have probably read it. My journey has been profoundly transformative in terms of self-awareness and emotional intelligence. I have loved every book that has graced my presence, as each one has added a new layer of awareness I previously lacked. My desire to expand my mind, maturity, and spirit has been insatiable since my first epiphany. I have sought wisdom from all kinds of teachers, writers, psychologists, and philosophies, and I am grateful because this journey has taught me the treasure that is learning for the sake of learning.

This openness has given me a detached approach to spirituality—I no longer aggressively cling to ideas that resonate with me. Instead, I recognize that the pursuit of truth is an eternal journey, often aligning with my current stage in life. That’s why I am so grateful to have discovered St. Teresa of Avila’s teachings after years of personal healing. Her work seems to tie all the loose ends together, as if I’ve been creating a quilt of knowledge, and her teachings are the thread sewing it all together. They have given me a sense of wholeness I have never felt before.

St. Teresa has brought profound clarity to the internal struggles I couldn’t quite define. She has drawn me closer to God’s love and essence more than any book ever has. Her words have moved me to tears, revealing just how deeply I have been caught between my attachment to worldly concerns and my yearning for something deeper. She has illuminated how lost I have been—chasing temporary pleasures, only to be left with a lingering emptiness. No matter how much I have gained or experienced externally, I have often felt a quiet sense of nothing ever being enough.

But now, she has helped me uncover a wellspring of spiritual abundance—a love so profound and sweet that nothing compares to its everlasting presence. No matter where I am in my journey, whether in abundance or simply making ends meet, I feel enough. I feel loved. I feel worthy of life. This understanding, that life is a journey leading to a beautiful destination where I will one day unite with the One who created the moon, stars, planets, oceans, and each of us, fills me with peace.

Why St. Teresa of Avila Matters Today?

St. Teresa’s wisdom clears up many misconceptions about the spiritual path. She reminds us that true transformation begins within. When we focus on nurturing our interior world, we naturally become better people, not just for ourselves, but for those around us.

Many religious figures emphasize changing the world outside of us—judging, condemning, and attempting to control others. But not St. Teresa. While she speaks of spiritual perfection, it is primarily because her writings were dedicated to those whose lives were committed to spiritual vocation. Yet, she constantly warns against delusions of superiority. She teaches that humility is the key to wisdom, that we must first remove the speck from our own eye before attempting to remove the speck from another’s.

She reveals that spiritual growth is not measured by how rigidly one follows religious rules but by how deeply one loves and cares for others. True spiritual evolution is reflected in the love we cultivate within ourselves. She teaches that the path to God is a never-ending journey of self-awareness, self-correction, and profound spiritual insights, one that unlocks hidden gifts within us.

My Journey with St. Teresa

I could go on and on about my love for St. Teresa. In fact, I am creating a series of videos exploring her teachings, and below, you’ll find my first video, where I break down who she was and how she became St. Teresa of Avila.

She was not your typical saint. In many ways, I see myself in her, a woman who was free-spirited and curious, yet called to serve in ways she didn’t always feel worthy or capable of. She, too, struggled with worldly attachments and desires before ultimately surrendering to the path God had set for her.

Her works have inspired countless souls, and I hope my interpretation of her teachings helps you see the beauty in her wisdom. More importantly, I hope it encourages you to look within, to discover the treasure hidden in your own soul.

I hope you leave feeling a little more inspired! XOXO – Blanca ❤
