The Three Ordinary Voices of God Series:
Pt. 1 The Voice of Needs
I began a series a few months ago on a really short but impactful book called The Three Ordinary Voices of God by Mathew Kelly. My intention was to create a segment for each of the voices through which God speaks to us. But you know how life goes, work and new hyperfixations take over, and the intention fades for an ADHD, neurodivergent mind like mine. One thing catches my attention, and suddenly I’m fully immersed in a new obsession.
Recently, I was meditating in the Franciscan Monastery gardens in Washington, DC. I sat alone, surrounded by trees and flowers, when a cute little red cardinal flew right in front of me—just as I received a sweet message from someone reminding me of an episode I had created almost seven months ago. They shared how much they related to it, and one thing led to another: I felt inspired to continue the series, just as I had originally intended.

That moment in the garden felt like a whisper from above, reminding me of my need to keep learning and expanding. It’s in that desire that my creativity is sparked, and my hope is always that what I create can inspire others to learn, too. That is what The Ordinary Voices of God are all about. Inspiring action and aligning with what He wants for us.
In today’s Part 1 episode, we’ll dive into the first ordinary voice: the voice of needs. I don’t think many of us really know what our true needs are. Often, we confuse needs with wants, because we live in a society that prioritizes wants. But our wants don’t always make us happy. Why? Because what we want isn’t always what we need. Our needs are constantly speaking to us, nudging us toward balance, growth, and a deeper connection with God. I’ll walk you through the four human needs (physical, emotional, intellectual, and spiritual) and share how even our everyday hungers can become ways of hearing God’s silent guidance.
When we ignore our needs, the effects aren’t always immediate, but they create a gradual corrosion of the spirit. One day, we wake up feeling depleted, like we’ve lived an unmet life, chasing all the wrong things. So how do we begin to follow our needs? By becoming clear on what they are, and by making decisive choices to align our lives with what God truly wants for us.
This is a great episode for anyone searching for spiritual alignment and learning to listen more deeply to the voice within, rather than the voice of the world. I also share my own journey of recognizing my needs, the ups, the downs, and the moments of clarity along the way. I create from a place of learning, so I’m right here with you as we walk this path of self-discovery together. As always, my hope is that this episode leaves you thinking, reflecting, and feeling a little more inspired.
