Part 1 & 2 of My Video Series is below for the Second Ordinary Voice of God: The Voice of Talents & Gifts
I’m continuing my series inspired by the book The Three Ordinary Voices of God by Matthew Kelly and diving into the second ordinary voice — the Voice of Talents. As you will discover, all three voices of God are interconnected, and we have a genuine Need (the first voice) to discover our talents and gifts. God is so beautiful and expansive, and because we are made in His image, we too have creative source within us.
Many falsely believe that they have no talents, which is understandable. I too, at one point in my life, believed I had no talent, potential, or creativity within me. The world conditions us to believe that only the extraordinary are bestowed with talent, purpose, or a mission for their life. When we don’t see ourselves as extraordinary, we cross out the idea that God could have graced us with anything meaningful to nurture. But the truth is, we are all bestowed with talents and gifts that will assist us in the mission or purpose God has assigned for our life. What is important to know is that it is our job to do the internal spiritual work to find them and discover them.
I personally have gone on this journey myself, and while the road of healing is not easy, it is worth it to seek alignment with what God wants for our life, even if it doesn’t always seem extraordinary.
The great Albert Einstein once said, “Everyone is a genius. But if you judge a fish by how fast it can climb a tree, it will live its whole life believing it is stupid.” Sometimes we were raised in environments that didn’t nurture self-belief and confidence in us. This is not an excuse to live your life as a victim or to blame our parents for what they did or didn’t do, remember, it is their first time being human too. They were probably doing the best they knew how.
But if you are graced with clarity, as I was many moons ago, and feel called to take control of your life, you must ask God for the grace and willpower to help you evolve into the person you know you could be. My whole life, when I was little, I struggled with deep insecurities of inadequacy and feeling less than intelligent. A naturally mediocre being who deep down always wished to be just a little better than what the world believed her to be. That deep desire, even through my struggles, led me to clarity. Because when I hit my rock bottoms and begged God to help me change. He did and in the process, I discovered things about myself I didn’t even know I had hidden within me, like my love for writing and learning, which I once believed I was incapable of pursuing.
Finding your talents isn’t about looking to be extraordinary, but having the humility to know that you don’t know anything, but you’re willing to try to move the cart of growth forward and let God lead as He helps you evolve. But first, you have to understand that to find our talents, we must be on the journey of radically accepting who we are and letting go of the stories that have incorrectly caused us to feel ashamed of existing. We measure success by applause, monetary gain, or status. But maybe our talents are less flashy, yet they make us feel alive and inspired. How do you know you have discovered a talent? Because you will feel joy and timelessness when you are in it. A spark. An insatiable curiosity to explore it more and more.
We just have to resist the voice of pride that keeps us stuck in cycles of fear and the belief that the interest or desire God has placed in our hearts isn’t something we could explore. God’s voice will never put you down, and it will never agree with you when you tell yourself negative things about who you are and what you are capable or incapable of. God wants you to take steps in the right direction and shift your focus to what He has called you to be. But that takes seeking clarity and context can provide that when we take the time to be introspective and see what truly matters. In a world that tries to keep you in low self-worth, it is a great act of rebellion to ask God for His assistance as we seek our own genius.
I am myself in route to exploring my talents. Is this the best blog you’ve ever read? Probably not. Are my videos still a struggle to edit and make smooth? Yes — they are not the best and no don’t get millions of views, but it makes me happy, and I feel a well of joy creating them because they feel aligned with what God has shown me I’m capable of doing.
So don’t worry so much about doing things to be seen as extraordinary. There is a great relief you feel once you realize, “I’m not very extraordinary,” and you don’t have to chase or feel disappointed because of that. I just have to be perfectly me, and follow my interests with passion and conviction.
I hope you all feel inspired by the stories I share in the next two episodes, which I tried to keep as short as possible for my ADHDers — and no, they are not perfectly cut, but the message is my way of hopefully bringing a little light into at least one person. As always, I hope you leave feeling a little more inspired.
