I’ve reached the final voice in The Three Ordinary Voices of God series: the voice of desire. I’ve truly enjoyed breaking down The Three Ordinary Voices of God by Matthew Kelly, and I hope you’ve enjoyed following my journey as I share the lessons I took from this book. I hope you take the time to read it yourself—it’s a quick read, but incredibly impactful.

This book quite literally fell into my lap as a gift from my sister, who found it in the free book box at her church. I was left in awe by the depth of wisdom it carried. It felt like the perfect first book to begin a creative journey rooted in learning and reflection. As I continue this journey with you, my hope is to grow spiritually and mentally, and to find a deeper sense of peace and wholeness as I strengthen my relationship with Christ in my heart.

This final voice is explored across two video episodes, where I break down the voice of desire—often misunderstood in a world that constantly tells us we are here to follow our desires. But what exactly are our desires? Many of us don’t truly understand them. More often than not, we’re convinced that our desires are uncontrollable and meant to be indulged at any moment. We’re especially encouraged to follow pleasure and physical urges.

If that were truly the case, we would be no different from animals—untamed beings acting purely on impulse. Desires are meant to guide us, but we must learn how to discern good desires from those that bring confusion and chaos. Desires are gifts from God; they wouldn’t have been given to us if they weren’t meant to be enjoyed. However, like all good things, wisdom is necessary to understand how to live them out in a way that brings us closer to God and to our ultimate desire. Our desires can be broken down into four categories: physical, emotional, intellectual, and spiritual. The world, through its constant attractiveness and distractions, slowly convinces us that physical desires are the key to happiness. But unchecked and untamed desires can lead us into exhaustion and disorder.

We are called to learn the hierarchy of desire—the divine order that allows us to become fully integrated spiritual beings. Spiritual desires should always lead. Intellectual desires should be cultivated. Emotional desires must be discerned. Physical desires should be funneled through the ordered guidance of the first three.

We can learn from our first parents, Adam and Eve, who show us what happens when desire is led by impulse rather than wisdom. And we can also learn from the New Adam and Eve—our spiritual parents, Mary and Joseph—who model the wisdom of ordered desire.

Desires are not meant to be condemned, but understood and formed wisely. When we seek union with God, our desires begin to align, and we move closer to the wholeness we are all truly searching for. I hope you enjoy these two episodes and the finale of this series, which I’ve poured a lot of love and care into as I continue developing my creativity. I hope it touches someone’s heart and leaves you with meaningful food for thought.
